Monterey Took 74% of August's Auction Dollars From 14% of the Cars

Collector car auctions moved $1.01 billion in August, up 51% against August 2025, according to the monthly market report CLASSIC.COM published on September 8. Sell-through came in at 75%, the best August in five years, and the average sale price hit $166,000, up 53% year over year and the highest August average the site has on record.

The number underneath those headlines is the one worth reading twice. Sold listings dipped 1.2%. Total listings fell 5.6%. All of that dollar growth came from price, not from volume.

August's five Monterey sales accounted for $751.3 million of the month's total. That is 74.4% of every dollar spent at auction in August, drawn from 14% of the cars that sold, and CLASSIC.COM reports it as the highest concentration it has ever measured.

The transport angle

Transport demand is counted in units, not dollars. A market that grows 51% in money while shrinking 1.2% in cars sold does not generate more loads. It generates the same number of loads, each carrying materially more value than it did a year ago.

That shifts where the risk sits. The exposure on a single enclosed booking has climbed with the average sale price, and the paperwork most owners never read has not moved with it. Cargo coverage on an enclosed hauler is written by the carrier, not by Citadel, and the figure that matters is the per-vehicle limit rather than the policy aggregate. A $166,000 average tells you what a routine load looks like now. A car at three or four times that is not routine, and it needs the limit confirmed in writing before dispatch, not after a claim. The 14% of cars carrying 74% of the dollars is, almost by definition, the enclosed segment. Those cars do not ride open, and inside enclosed they increasingly do not ride bottom deck either. If the concentration holds through the fall calendar, demand for single-car and top-load capacity tightens ahead of general enclosed capacity, because the buyers bidding at those levels are not flexible about deck position. There is a lane consequence too. When three quarters of a month's money changes hands on the Monterey Peninsula, the cars behind it leave California over the following weeks on long-haul enclosed runs, most of them eastbound. The Monterey to New York corridor absorbs a disproportionate share of that, and it is the lane where lead times stretch first when a strong August turns into a busy September.

What to do about it

Ask for the certificate of insurance and read the per-vehicle cargo limit before you authorize dispatch. Brokers in the network that fulfills Citadel bookings can produce it on request, and a carrier that cannot is answering the question for you.

Photograph the car at load, in daylight, including undercarriage and wheel faces. At current values the gap between a $2,000 claim and a $20,000 claim is usually the quality of the condition record, not the damage itself.

Give a fall move more lead time than a spring one. Auction season and the southbound seasonal flow overlap from October through December, and the capacity that is easy to book in May is not in November.
