RM Sotheby's sold a 2014 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse "Jean-Pierre Wimille" for CHF 4,505,000 at the Park Hyatt Zurich on 26 September. It was lot 113, it showed 3,766 kilometres at cataloguing, and it is one of three examples built in that specification as part of the Bugatti Legends series.
Three cars is a thin market, so a single public result carries more weight here than it would for a standard Grand Sport. Until this sale, a top-specification Veyron was a car most owners still thought of in seven figures, singular. The Zurich number moves the reference point for the whole Legends run, and it does it in public, in a catalogue anyone can cite.
That matters more for paperwork than for pride.
The transport angle
Our own Bugatti Veyron shipping page carries a $2,000,000 minimum declared value, because that is what a well-kept Veyron has been worth for several years. A Zurich result at CHF 4,505,000 puts a Legends car at roughly double that figure. If you own one, the declared value on your last transport booking is almost certainly stale, and the per-vehicle cargo limit you accepted alongside it was sized against the old number.
Most enclosed carriers write a per-vehicle cargo limit somewhere between $250,000 and $1,000,000. A handful go higher with scheduled endorsements. None of them raise a limit because a car turned out to be worth more after the fact. Enclosed shipping insurance covers how the tiers work and where an owner's own agreed-value policy has to pick up the difference. The short version is that the gap is the owner's, not the carrier's, and it is the owner's job to find out how wide it is before the trailer arrives.
The physical side is unchanged and unforgiving. A Veyron sits at about 4.7 inches of ground clearance and weighs roughly 4,162 pounds. That combination rules out ramps at any practical angle, which is why the car is a liftgate load and a single-car load. Our liftgate versus ramp guide covers the clearance arithmetic. Bugatti's own handling protocol also assumes trained hands on the car rather than a general-freight driver, and that is a question to ask about the assigned carrier rather than the broker.
One more wrinkle specific to this lot. The sale was in Switzerland, so the buyer's first move is an export and import sequence, not a domestic booking. Customs documentation, the ocean or air leg, and the receiving port all come before any enclosed truck touches the car. Our international transport guide sets out the order those steps happen in and what usually delays them.
What to do about it
If you own a Veyron, a Chiron, or anything else in a run of under a dozen cars, do three things this quarter.
Get a current valuation in writing from your insurer or an appraiser who follows the model. A result like Zurich is exactly the sort of event that outruns a policy written two renewals ago.
Ask your broker for the per-vehicle cargo limit on the certificate of the carrier actually assigned to your load, not the network's headline figure, and ask whether it can be endorsed upward for one movement. Carriers in our broker network will produce the certificate on request. If a limit cannot be raised, the answer is usually a rider on your own collector policy that stays in force during transit, not a different truck.
Confirm the deductible and who carries it, and confirm the coverage holds while the car is on the liftgate and not yet on the deck. That is the moment claims actually happen.
Buyers shipping out of a European sale should treat the release date as the start of a three to six week sequence rather than a pickup date. The auction transport prep checklist covers the condition report and documentation order that keeps the domestic leg from waiting on paperwork.
