Hyundai Tells 94,622 Genesis Owners to Park Away From Other Vehicles

Hyundai filed recall 26V664 on October 8 covering 94,622 Genesis sedans whose power seat switch can stick and overheat. Owners are told to park away from other vehicles, and no remedy notice goes out until December 6.

Hyundai Motor America filed a Part 573 report with NHTSA on October 8 covering 94,622 Genesis sedans, and the owner guidance inside it is the part that matters to anyone with a shipment booked. Hyundai recommends owners park the car outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the repair is done. The campaign is NHTSA 26V664, and it splits into 54,644 2015 to 2016 Hyundai Genesis sedans built between February 21, 2014 and February 24, 2016, and 39,978 2017 to 2020 Genesis G80s built between March 17, 2016 and November 7, 2019.

The defect is in the power seat slider and height adjustment control switch on non-memory seats. External force can dislodge or damage the switch and leave it stuck in the on position, which runs the seat motor continuously. Prolonged operation can overheat the motor, and Hyundai describes a fire risk both while driving and while parked. The warning signs it lists are a burning odor from the seat and a seat control switch that stops working. Hyundai estimates 1 percent of the population carries the defect and reports two alleged fires in the US, with no crashes or injuries.

The transport angle

An enclosed trailer is a sealed steel box holding six to eight other cars. Hyundai's own instruction names other vehicles and structures as the thing to stay away from, which is a direct conflict with the way these cars normally move. That does not make the shipment impossible, but it does make it a conversation to have before the truck is dispatched rather than at the loading ramp.

The timing is the harder problem. The remedy is still in development. Hyundai plans no interim owner notification at all, and dealer and owner letters for the actual repair do not go out until December 6, 2026. VIN lookup went live on October 13. So for roughly the next seven weeks, every affected car on the road is a car with an open, unremedied fire-risk recall and no appointment to fix it. Snowbird season runs straight through that window, and the 2015 to 2020 Genesis is squarely the kind of car that gets moved south in November.

Worth being precise about uncertainty here. The recall report does not state whether the seat circuit stays live with the ignition off, and the trigger it describes is physical damage to the switch rather than something that happens on its own. Two confirmed incidents across 94,622 vehicles is a low rate. The point is not that the car will catch fire on a trailer. The point is that a carrier who learns about an open park-outside recall after the car is strapped down has a decision to make with a deadline on it, and you do not want that decision made for you.

What to do about it

Run the VIN first at nhtsa.gov/recalls. The lookup has carried this campaign since October 13, and a clean result ends the question.

If the car is affected, say so when you book. An open recall is a disclosure item the same way a fluid leak or a dead battery is, and the enclosed desk that fulfills Citadel bookings would rather hear it in the quote than discover it at pickup. Ask two things specifically: whether the carrier accepts vehicles with an open fire-risk recall, and whether they want the battery disconnected or on a tender for the run. Policies differ between carriers in our broker network, and the answer changes your prep.

Note the seat position and the switch condition on the condition report at pickup, with photos. If the switch is already damaged or the seat is inoperative, that is the described failure mode and the car should go to a dealer before it goes on a truck.

If the shipment can wait until after December 6, waiting is the cleaner option. A repaired car is a normal booking. For anything moving before then, the usual questions about enclosed shipping insurance apply with more force than usual, and it is worth reading how a claim actually gets processed before you need to know. Model-specific loading notes live on the Genesis shipping page, and if you are new to this, the first-time buyer guide covers what a condition report is supposed to capture.
