Hagerty's September market report, published October 21, counted a dozen cars sold for more than $1 million on online platforms during the month against eight at live venues. Four of September's ten biggest sales closed on Bring a Trailer: a 2020 Ferrari 488 Pista Spider at $1,808,500, a 2019 Ford GT Heritage at $1,573,500, a 2021 Lamborghini Aventador LP770-4 SJV at $1,557,500, and a second 488 Pista Spider at $1,517,500. A 2019 McLaren Senna took $2,703,750 on duPont Registry Live. The rest of the top ten came out of RM Sotheby's Zurich, plus one lot from an online-only RM collection sale.
The month's headline reading was flat. The Hagerty Market Rating slipped 0.01 to 58.73, which Hagerty still treats as a flat market. Underneath it, September volume was up 41% on 2025, average sale price up 30% year over year and median up 7%. One figure matters more than any of those for someone about to move a car: only 70% of lots at the $1 million level now carry a reserve, down from 84% at this time last year. More consignors are letting cars go, so more cars are actually changing hands and needing a trailer.
The transport angle
A live sale is a logistics event. The auction house stages the cars in one place on one date, transporters work the grounds, and a carrier can load several cars out of a single venue on one run. That consolidation is why per-car pricing during auction week is usually better than a one-off pickup, and why the pickup window around a live sale is short but predictable.
An online close is the opposite. Twelve seven-figure cars sold online in September means twelve separate addresses, twelve sellers with their own access constraints, and twelve buyers who in most cases never saw the car in person. There is no staging area and no post-sale consolidation. The clock runs out, the invoice goes out, and the car is still sitting in a private garage that may be two time zones from its new owner.
Three things that changes.
Pickup is residential by default. Gated streets, steep driveways and tight turning radii decide whether a 53-foot trailer can get within sight of the car. Carriers in our broker network will usually run a smaller rig or meet at a nearby lot, but that gets arranged before dispatch, not on the morning of pickup. Door-to-door vs terminal-to-terminal covers how those two options actually play out on a single-car move.
Condition is undocumented at handover. At a live sale the car has been inspected, moved and photographed by the house. After an online sale, the bill of lading written at pickup is often the first independent record of the car's condition since the seller's own listing photos. On a $1.8 million Ferrari 488 that document is the entire basis of any later claim.
Declared value sits on one load. A single car at $1.5 million or more can sit above the per-vehicle cargo limit on a standard enclosed certificate. Ask for the certificate before booking rather than after. The enclosed shipping insurance guide covers what to read on it.
What to do about it
Book while the auction is still running, not after it closes. On Bring a Trailer the close date is known a week out, and enclosed capacity for a named week is easier to hold than to find. The deposit at risk if you are outbid costs less than the premium on a rush dispatch.
Get three answers from the seller in writing before dispatch: whether the car starts and moves under its own power, the ground clearance at the front splitter, and the exact street access at the pickup address. Those three decide liftgate or ramp, and getting them wrong is the most common reason a single-car pickup fails on arrival. The auction transport prep checklist is the short version to send the seller.
If the car came out of a live European sale instead, such as the Zurich cars that led the month, the clock is different and the paperwork is longer. RM Sotheby's consignments crossing the Atlantic run on customs timelines, not trailer timelines.
